Third Conditional: Talking Hypothetically about the Past

Let’s now move onto the third conditional by looking at the examples below and completing the rules in the following exercise.

(1) If England hadn’t missed a penalty, they would/might/could have gone on to win the World Cup.

(2) I would/could have watched the match if I hadn’t been working at the time.

 

Now have a go at the following exercise by filling the gap with the correct form of the verbs in brackets. You will need to use a continuous form in one example.
