Getting Started

There is no doubt that you will be familiar with the basics of comparative and superlative language as it’s generally something which is taught from A2 level onwards. The aim of this lesson is to move you beyond the basics by teaching you how to use higher level structures to modify adjectives, adverbs and nouns in order to describe big and small differences, as well as the idea of things being the same or changing together. We will also be taking a look at some fixed expressions.

Comparative and superlative language may well be tested in any part of the C1 exam, so you will be provided with exercises reflective of parts 2 and 4 of the Reading and Use of English paper before we take a look at how you can show off your language in the Speaking part.

Firstly, let’s look at what you already know. In each of the sentences below, mark the correct option to complete the sentence. There may be more than one possible answer. At this point, don’t worry too much if you make mistakes as the language will be covered over the following pages.
